Alene Art: The Portfolio Website of Perth-based Illustrator Alison Mutton - Illustration for the children's market, book design, help with self-publishing, needle felting and portraiture
I'm active on a number of social media platforms. You can find me at:
My name is Alison Mutton and I'm an illustrator based in Perth, Western Australia. I hold a BA with Honours in Design from Curtin University; I majored in Illustration, but I also do design work. I specialise in children's illustration, including fairytale-style fantasy and historically-inspired illustration, but I can produce almost anything if I put my mind to it. I've never been beaten by a commission yet!
I've been drawing for as long as I could hold a pencil, and was fascinated by stories and books even before that, so the opportunity to combine these passions is one of the most fabulous things I can imagine. I relish each new job as a chance to expand my skills and perhaps try something that I have never done before. I'm happy using a variety of media (sometimes all in the same piece) – pencil, watercolour, coloured pencil, ink, Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. I'm allergic to oil paint, so that's one medium I steer clear of!
I've been freelancing as an illustrator since 2007, a year before I graduated, but I had done many portraiture commissions before that. To date I've worked on over 100 books for ReadyEd Publications, and in 2014 I did the illustrations for Sioban Timmer's Toughen Up, Princess. In 2016 I completed illustrations for the poetry book The Little Book of Silly Rhymes and Odd Verses by Ian Andrew, and self-published The Literary Romance Colouring Book. In 2017 I illustrated Sioban Timmer's new picture book, Feral Fergus, published by Jasper Press as well as two private publications, Maria and the Shiny Red Car by Beverley Knezevic and Godfrey by Tim Holmes. In 2019 I worked on Aqua Dog for Lisa Van Der Weilen, Clancy The Quokka (written by Lili Wilkinson) and Allen and Unwin and the cover for HM Waugh's The Lost Stone of SkyCity for Fremantle Press. I love the way each commission is a completely new set of challenges, and enjoy adapting myself to suit different needs.
When I'm not drawing, I like to read, play the piano, needle felt and watch old movies, and I'm learning swing dancing. In a more perfect world I could do all of these things at the same time, and then I'd have even more time for drawing! My cavoodle Myrna makes sure I step away from my desk every day and get some exercise too.

Alison was a pleasure to work with, quick to answer emails and make adjustments to the illustrations/design. She not only did exactly what I expected of her, but provided extra samples and lots of designs to chose from. On the design side itself, Alison has great eye for color. I made a simple explanation of what theme I'm going for and she was spot on with the color choices. The drawings themselves were clean and crisp, exactly what I was going for and she was proficient with any adjustments I needed when it came to digital formatting, transparent background, etc. Someone I would definitely recommend working with!
Thank you very much, we received the painting and it looks great, can't believe how much more beautiful it is in person.
Alison Mutton’s artistry speaks for itself.
I was pleased with her ability to interpret my request accurately.
I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Alison and her work.
A BIG THANK YOU for all your wonderful, illustrative work Alison.
Our books would be dull without you!!
Without doubt, Alison Mutton is a talented artist. She is also a thoughtful and imaginative illustrator sensitive to the nuances of the text with which is is working. We asked her for illustrations for a children's picture book and she produced a terrific series of drawings, while working to a very short time line. She also provided the typography and page layouts. Despite being under time pressure, Alison consulted with us at all stages of production and responded promptly and skilfully to our queries, comments and requests.
We were very pleased with the resulting picture book, and recommend Alison most highly.
